Mercouri Estate
This estate was founded in the 1860s by Theodore Mercouri and revived
by his descendants Vassilis and Christos Kanellakopoulos in the 1980’s.
They produce wine 150 stremmata (= 15 hectares) of vines on the western coast of the Peloponnese. We have initially selected three wines that we think have more than a good chance of converting any who might still be sceptical as to the merits of Greek wine.
The Foloi is made from Roditis Alepou grapes with an addition of 10 % Viognier, all growing at around 6oom altitude some 40 minutes drive from their cellar close to the shore of the lonian sea opposite Zakynthos. It is irresistibly fresh and delicious, and very attractively priced. Next up comes
the Kallisto, made from Assyrtiko (90%) and Robola (10%), excellent again
and at a much gentler price then the now fashionable bottlings from Santorini.
The red wine Antares, is a roughly 50/50 mix of avgoustiatis, native to the nearby island of Zakynthos, and mourvedre, the grape that gives the magic to Bandol and here similarly has its toes almost in the waters of the Mediterranean. Only about 4500 bottles are produced per annum. We have just secured the last ten cases of the 2015 vintage and hope to follow that with the 2017 when it is released.
