Domaine Schoffit
In the pantheon of great Alsatian winegrowers, Domaine Schoffit continues to maintain a somewhat confidential profile. We seem to share a rather similar natural disposition that renders us almost willingly inept when it comes to any form of active marketing. There is therefore a kind of mutual sympathy, I suspect, in our relationship. Having said that, we really would like to turn the volume up slightly with regard to their wines and bring them to the wider audience which they thoroughly deserve. It was the knowledge that they had vines on the exceptional grand cru site of Rangen in Thann that first spurred my interest here, whose steep south facing slope of volcanic soil really merits a mention in the same breath as any of the world’s greatest vineyard sites. It has an ability to produce a unique expression from any of the grapes grown there with the character of the actual ‘terroir’ always seeming to dominate that of the mere grape variety, thus achieving the goal of real originality that we look for from the world’s greatest wines. When that is achieved we can swallow the price with more equanimity.
