Domaine Pacaud

The brothers Julien and Sebastien Pacaud who run this estate were born here in Chasselas where the Maconnais meets Beaujolais and can justifiably claim to know every field, track, wood, stream and every parcel of vineyard. They work with total respect for the soil and ecosystem of each vineyard, understanding perfectly that the vine must be nourished by its soil, by earth that has not been polluted by pesticides. The vineyard sites and the way in which they manage them provide us with white wines with a greater degree of precision, of finesse, of class, than we have hitherto found in the Maconnais. The St Veran ‘La Côte’ has an elevation of 300 – 400m, faces fully south, on hard limestone. The vines are 35-40 years old. The wine is racy, more compelling than a lot of Puligny Montrachet at more than double the price. The St Veran ‘Les Pres Batards’ is too steep a site to work with a tractor. It combines clay/limestone and granite. It is aged for 22 months on its lees before bottling, with 12 months in cask (not new). Their Pouilly Loché is from deeper soils with clay and ‘crasse de fer’ while their top ‘cru’, the Pouilly Fuissé Les Chevrieres is a Premier Cru with greater potential for aging in bottle. In the 2021 vintage just 1200 bottles were produced. The whole estate now comprises some 13.5 hectares in total. It has made a useful and exciting addition to our range.
