The star of the Grüner Veltliner ‘maestro’ Bernhard Ott shines ever more brightly and his wines are now really starting to show tangible benefits as a result of the disciplines of biodynamic viticulture in practice here for more than a decade. Bernhard sees that his vines have become more resistant to disease and drought conditions and that his wines have improved balance with a degree less alcohol and are ever better expressions of their individual ‘terroirs’. He has now at least 80 different parcels of vineyard over some 50 hectares. When I was first looking for a source of Grüner Veltliner my other Austrian winegrowers unanimously recommended me to knock on Bernhard Ott’s door. That was very good advice, for we now regularly get forward orders for a significant volume of the next vintage wines before the grapes are even off the vine!
