Alain Coudert’s vines, in complete contrast to those of the Chiroubles of Cheysson, grow at low altitude below the village of Fleurie and close to the boundary with Moulin-a-Vent, long regarded as providing the most robust wines of the region. The wines of La Roilette are typically dark in colour and usually demand several years before reaching their best. We are still enjoying magnums of the 1999 vintage. The Brouilly is much more precocious and is delicious soon after bottling. Much Fleurie is light and floral as its name might suggest, but not so the wines here which are deep and spicy, taking on with age a character at times similar to that of a northern Burgundy, at others more reminiscent of a generous wine from the southern Rhone.
